A COMMUNITY has been left in shock after a man was found dead in his home in Workington on Christmas Day, prompting the launch of a murder investigation.
On Tuesday, December 26 Cumbria Police announced that a man was arrested and a murder investigation launched after a man was found dead in a house on Clay Street.
Cumbria Police said they were contacted by the North West Ambulance Service shortly before 5.55pm on Monday, December 25.
This came after a man, in his 30s, was found deceased in his home address.
A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.
Cordons were in place across Clay Street and South Watt Street throughout the day on Boxing Day with an increased police presence throughout the area due to the incident.
The community of Workington has been left in shock following the news of the death and murder investigation being launched, with some saying the incident is 'worrying' for the town.
Workington Mayor Cllr Beth Dixon said: "I was shocked and saddened to see the reports of the death on Christmas Day, although little details have been released it is a shock to the whole town when something like this happens especially on Christmas day.
"My condolences go out to all the friends and family of the man.
"I would also like to thank the police for the handling of the case and the increase in presence in the town to help reassure the public and residents in the area."
Cumberland councillor for St Michael's ward, Barbara Cannon said: "Its obviously devastating news, it's a very deeply worrying and tragic incident to happen and a terrible shock for our local community. My thoughts are with the family and friends of everyone involved."
