IN what is becoming a Christmas tradition, a man from Huddersfield donned his Santa Claus attire for the fourth year to lead a festive hike up Latrigg, extending an open invitation to those who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.
Jay Mistry's Christmas tradition began in 2019 when he looked to bring people together on Christmas Day.
In the first year, seven people joined the hike, a number that grew to around 60 last year. However, this Christmas marked a milestone for the Christmas walk, as 73 people laced up their walking boots despite the challenging weather.
"We even had families and children this time, as well as people on their own - it's definitely growing," Jay said.
"It feels good, it is great to get more people out. Some people I spoke to said it made their Christmas.
"Loads of people have asked me to do it again next year. We'll be doing two days next year, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and I'll be in the same Santa suit - it's still soggy," he said.
Jay even joined a family from West Cumbria's Christmas dinner in the evening, and on Christmas Eve, Jay along with nine others grabbed a pint in Keswick ahead of the walk.
"The reactions and comments have been mind-blowing. Even online from those who can't make it.
"When I first started this, it was for loneliness and mental health, but now it's families, couples on holiday - it's now a Christmas walk with a community that keeps growing," Jay said.
Jay said the walk would remain the same come 2024, suitable for mixed abilities.
"People are already booked up for next year, so that's us. I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it," he said.
