A MAN has been jailed and two others given suspended prison terms after breaking into a high street store and stealing cigarettes.
Caitlin Wilson, 22, Thomas Dempsey, 34, and Steven Hilland, 57, admitted burglary other than dwelling when they appeared before magistrates on Tuesday.
The defendants had entered WH Smith on Risman Place in Workington as trespassers on December 30 and stole cigarettes, tobacco, lighters and other items to an unknown value, the town’s Ramsay Brow court heard.
Dempsey, of Cross Street, Whitehaven, was jailed for 16 weeks. Magistrates felt only a custodial sentence could be justified because there was some planning, disturbance and damage to property.
Wilson, of Derwentwater Avenue, Workington was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.
Hilland, of Hillcrest, Northside, was given an 18-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
The defendants must each pay £500 in compensation to WH Smith.
