CARLISLE'S Refugee Action Group (CRAG) has given thanks to residents and local organisations that have helped and supported refugees and those seeking asylum in Carlisle throughout 2023.

People have been praised for actively engaging in activities fostering understanding and inclusivity for many who have been displaced.

These activities ranged from art, language and education programmes, sports, community activities, helping in setting up homes, welcoming refugees and asylees into the church congregations, and initiating dialogues.

According to a statement by CRAG, efforts by many have helped make the lives of many refugee mothers, fathers, and children more tolerable.

"Christmas is the time of year when we recognise and celebrate the power of our true human values of tolerance, kindness and understanding, and how important they are to a rich and diverse society," the statement reads.

"CRAG (Carlisle Refugee Action Group) is grateful to be part of an ever-growing network extolling and extending these values all year round and is thankful to have been involved in the many activities that have helped those whose lives have been unsettled by war, discrimination, torture and denial of human rights.

"From helping uprooted families from Afghanistan and Syria find their feet, to supporting those in our city on a more temporary basis seeking asylum, the time and effort given by citizens has been exemplary and so much appreciated by those with next to nothing.

"We wish to thank you all."
