WHINLATTER Forest have announced they will be closing part of the forest whilst tree felling takes place.

For safety reasons parts of the forest and any trails which pass through, will be closed for approximately three months. There are closures and diversion signs to follow through the forest.

The tree felling will mostly including 'thinning' which means removing about 20 per cent of the trees in the area being worked on. This will open up the canopy and develop stable future trees better suited to the increasingly stormy climate.

There is one small section which is unsuitable for thinning and the trees in this area will be felled to avoid potential storm damage and help diversify the forest in the future.

Trails closed/diverted will be:

Walking

  • Wow Trail
  • Comb Beck Trail
  • Seat How Summit Trail
  • Gruffalo Trail

Cycling

  • Red North Loop
  • Blue Quercus Trail (closed north side of the forest, open south side)
  • Gorse Cycle Trail (closed north side of forest, open south side)

Running

  • Pink 5km Running Trail
  • Turquoise 5km Running Trail
  • Purple 10km Running Trail
  • Purple Half Marathon Running Trail

In addition to this, the WildPlay trail will also be closed for a shorter time in January.  The Café Ambio and Go Ape will remain open, as well as car park, visitor centre and shop.

Sally Burchall, Visitor Experience Manager at Whinlatter Forest said “The team here at Whinlatter would like to thank everyone for their patience whilst these works are taking place – we’ve timed things to take place at the quietest time of year to minimise disruption and will be posting regular updates to keep everyone informed.

“There’s still plenty to do here in the forest, as well as many diverted routes for visitors looking to walk, run and cycle there are many miles of unaffected trails as well as upcoming events including dark sky walks and races, but we do ask everyone to follow all signage to help keep everyone safe.

“Further information is available on our website and our friendly visitor centre team are also happy to help.”
