CARLISLE residents have called for more shops in the city centre following Cumberland Council’s announcement that progress is being made on a series of major projects set to 'transform' the city.

Kicking off the rejuvenation schemes in 2024 are the Devonshire Street, English Street, Market Square, and Greenmarket projects, alongside the ongoing progress of the Carlisle Station Gateway Project.

Endorsed by Carlisle Future High Streets Fund, Devonshire Street is set to undergo a complete transformation from February 5.

Having additional outdoor seating, street furniture, benches, cycle parking, trees, and plants, the project aims to create a meaningful activity zone, providing ample spaces for residents and visitors to stroll and spend time sitting outdoors.

“I feel that any improvements to the city’s transport, education and environment are all welcome, but the city is absolutely terrible for shopping, providing a poor experience for local and visiting shoppers,” said resident Martin Coulthard.

“Medium-sized cities such as Carlisle have borne the brunt of the demise in retail footfall. Smaller market towns seem to be ok, larger cities again seem to prosper, having a bigger population.

“From my experience we need more independent shops, not multiples, if you want Carlisle to thrive... shop local, not online, think about opening a shop, try an independent for your fruit and veg, your appliances or clothes.

“Put independent businesses owners in charge of the city centre and watch it thrive.”

Mr Coulthard's words were echoed by Chris Clark who raised concerns about the future of retail in the city.

“Looks pretty (the project), but the city centre is becoming a ghost town,” said Chris.

“House of Fraser is just going to be a massive empty building soon, as Sports Direct haven't put any money into maintenance on the building and needs a tonne of work. We need shops, proper shops, not just chains of cafes.”

The leader of Cumberland Council said that the ‘enhanced business areas’ would boost visitor numbers.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said: “We are thrilled with the significant investment from central Government to enhance Carlisle.

“As visitors step out from the train station into the city centre, they will encounter a vastly improved area, reflecting the pride we all have in our city.

“Enhanced business areas are poised to positively impact dwelling and visitor numbers, and we hope the community shares our anticipation for brightening up the area.”
