Carlisle has been shortlisted as one of the UK's most depressing places to live in the UK, according to a recent poll.

Residents of the UK’s most boring boroughs and tedious towns are being asked to nominate their home as the most 'soul-destroying' in Britain.

The poll, run by scathing town reviews site iLiveHere.com, is scouring the UK looking for the worst place to live with 153 British towns and cities currently on the shortlist.

The poll is something of an annual tradition but this year the emphasis has changed from a poll locating the 'worst place' to live in the UK, to one finding the most depressing.

Carlisle, perhaps unfairly, features on the shortlist, so the News & Star has thought of six reasons why the border city isn't a depressing place to live.

1) Historic charm: Carlisle is known for its rich history, with a well-preserved city centre and historic architecture, such as the iconic cathedral and castle. Tullie might be closed right now for redevelopment, but it represents a superb place to visit in Carlisle.

2) Green spaces: Access to parks, gardens, and green spaces can contribute to a positive living experience, offering places to relax, and exercise. Bitts Park, Chances Park and Rickerby Park are all great options close to the city centre.

3) Community spirit: A strong sense of community can foster a supportive environment. Carlisle has plenty of local groups including sports teams and societies. Plus, everyone up north is friendly.

4) Dogs: Our four-legged friends are a great source of serotonin and it seems like nearly everyone in this city has a dog. From daschunds to dobermanns, if you're a dog lover, then Carlisle is the place to be.

5) Proximity to nature: Carlisle's proximity to the scenic landscapes, mountains, and bodies of water that Cumbria has to offer makes it a great place to explore the outdoors.

6) It smells great: Anyone who has wandered the streets of Carlisle will have at one time or another, enjoyed the intoxicating aromas emitted by Carr's Biscuit Factory. What better way to start your day?
