A NEW artisan bakery is offering sweet treats and gourmet savoury snacks to Carlisle.
Dough-Luxe, which opened on Thursday, December 7, is located in the city's market hall on Scotch Street, in stall 41, and stocks homemade treats from doughnuts and fudge cakes to focaccias and sausage rolls.
The business is owned by Carlisle-born and bred Andy King, who has been able to realise his dream of owning a bakery.
He said: "When I was young I was always watching cooking shows, all the way from CBeebies stuff like Big Cook Little Cook, and I remember coming home from primary school and watching Ready Steady Cook and it has always been my passion.
"Straight out of school I started to work as a chef and I have been working around the town in a couple of restaurants and it has always been in my head.
"I think it is a lot of chefs' dreams to own their own business but not everybody can make it come to life."
Dough-Luxe was also recently boosted by being awarded a five out of five food hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency, with this adding more fuel to Andy's desire to take the business forward.
In the future, Andy hopes to expand his savoury options and offer coffees at his market stall, whilst also continuing to refine his patisserie.
However, reflecting on just over a month in business he expressed his happiness with the support Dough-Luxe has received.
He said: "Friends and family alike did me a solid and helped get the word out.
"Even before I had opened I was quite shocked at how quickly the followers racked up and it showed that people are appreciative of someone going out on their own, especially when an artisan bakery is something that I feel Carlisle has lacked."
REVIEW
After getting to know all about Andy and his business I tucked into some of the mouthwatering morsels that were on offer, starting with a spicy nduja sausage roll that was still warm when I picked it up.
Perfectly crispy and flaky pastry encased pork sausage bountifully laced with Nduja that upped the flavour factor.
After inhaling this sausage roll, that deserved its gourmet title, I tucked into dessert. Dough-Luxe's signature Biscoff Blitz doughnut is a soft treat of jaw-stretching proportions with an oozing biscoff spread core, generously topped with chocolate and crushed caramelised biscuit.
All together my lunch from Dough-Luxe cost £6.80 and I can safely predict that this new artisan bakery is on its way to becoming a local favourite.
