Carlisle’s teenage European boxing champion John Joe Carrigan will be back on the hunt for glory this weekend.
The Border City Amateur Boxing Club star is set to launch his campaign for his sixth national title.
Carrigan, 16, will represent his club at the north west region in Sunday’s pre-quarter-finals at Firwood Bootle Cricket Club.
He will take on Merseyside and Cheshire champion Lewis Robinson from Liverpool’s Gemini ABC in the open youth 71kg category.
Should Carrigan progress, he will then face quarter-finals and potential semi-finals in Rotherham the following weekend.
Carrigan’s coaches at Border City are backing the teenage boxer to maintain his impressive recent record.
“John Joe has left no stone unturned,” said coach Ian Archibald.
“He has trained very hard for this, including right through the Christmas period, and travelled all over the country for top sparring as well as gym nights and his roadwork.
“He’s in good shape and ready for Sunday’s opening bout.
“He is a credit to the sport and his club, everyone at the club is right behind him.”
The boxer's string of titles in recent years included the EUBC European Junior title when Carrigan represented Great Britain.
