PLANS have been put forward to resurrect 'one of the most iconic cafes in the country' that was destroyed by fire back in 2018.

Supporters have followed in abundance after plans were revealed on social media to revive the Hartside Cafe in Alston, where car fanatics, cyclists and motorcyclists would regularly stop off on the steep and winding road between Penrith and Alston.

The application was submitted to Westmorland & Furness' Planning Committee on January 18 on behalf of Hartside Cafe Ltd.

In a post on social media, those behind the application said: "We are eager to gather input regarding potential features and amenities for both the interior and exterior spaces.

"Your suggestions, whether modest or ambitious, are highly valued as we aim to create a welcoming and accommodating environment."

They have already thrown up several concepts for consideration.

These include an outdoor water tap to provide complimentary water for cyclists and dogs in warm weather, charging points for electric vehicles, and shelving in the restrooms for safe storage of motorcyclists' helmets.

The supporting statement with the application reads: "The significant and most obvious benefit of the proposal will be the reinstatement of perhaps one of the most iconic cafés in the country.

"There is a significant national following of the café particularly in the motorcycle world and significant support across social media to see the café reinstated."

Four full-time employees and eight part-time employees are proposed within the plans.

Locals and also those from further afield have been quick in sharing their support on the planning portal.

Paula Topping, from Alston, said: "The redevelopment of the site is long overdue and it can only bring benefits, such as local jobs, a place for visitors and locals to enjoy the amazing views, and improvements to the car park.

"An attraction which will bring people back though Alston, as so many now bypass it due to the lack of the café."

Jane Donahue, from Doncaster, also said: "This is a well-known and much-loved landmark we have all missed. This application has to succeed."
