COUNCILLORS will be given training after a revised Social Media Guidance policy for Cumberland Council was adopted this week.
Members of the council's standards and governance committee took the decision on Wednesday (February 7) at a meeting at Allerdale House in Workington.
They discussed the revised policy had proposed changes highlighted in red and covered areas including online harassment and what councillors should do if they received online abuse.
Clare Liddle, the council's monitoring officer, told members that councillors would be 'signposted' to training on how to stay safe online.
Committee chairwoman councillor Gillian Troughton (Howgate, Labour) said the policy needed to be highlighted to the other councillors.
And councillor Tim Pickstone (Longtown, Lib Dems), the committee's vice chairman, suggested it could be included as an agenda item to be discussed in the various political group meetings.
Members agreed the draft policy and suggested a few minor amendments which Ms Liddle said she would include.
