It seems that in Cumbria, 1974 was a sporty year, with teams and individuals competing in a range of events.

Among the most striking pictures is of Carlisle area competitors who took part in the Cumberland badminton tournament in the Market Hall, Carlisle.
Left to right are J Hetherington, W Birkett, B Skinner, A Black, S Goad, M McClounie and G Bowyer.
All have long hair and J Hetherington and A Black sport full moustaches, while G Bowyer has both a combover and sideburns.

There are also competitors from Carlisle and district who took part in the Cumbria Junior Judo championships held in the sports centre.
Mr K McNeill, organiser of the event, is pictured left, while the prestigious guest on the right is James Dickie, chairman of the Judo Association of Great Britain.

An open day at Talkin Tarn included boat races, and a picture shows four 11-year-olds from Brampton – Philip Corrie, Martin Brown, John Kershaw and Kelvin Carruthers – with acting cox Derek Carruthers, setting off for their first race.
Overseeing the young crew is club captain Eddie Carruthers.

The Amato Cup final was held in Carlisle, and pictured are both the winners – a surprisingly solemn looking Wetheral football team – and runners-up The Sportsman team.

Racquet sports were clearly popular, and the Cumberland Ladies tennis team were hoping to end the season on a high.
Unfortunately, they were beaten by Durham in their final match.
