Essential gas works being undertaken in Penrith, which began at the start of January, are scheduled to conclude in three weeks.

Northern Gas Networks confirmed in a recent statement, that plans to complete work that has been impacting Middlegate, Devonshire Street, and King Street, will be clear by March 8.

The distributor has been replacing ageing pipework with more durable plastic alternatives to ensure a continued supply of safe gas to those in the surrounding area.

During the works, Penrith Business Improvement District (BID) has funded free usage of the council-operated pay and display car parks after 3pm.

It follows after a spokesperson from Westmorland and Furness Council said they are "acutely aware of the impact these works have on local businesses and the community".

In a statement from Northern Gas Networks, a spokesperson said: "The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

"The reinstatement work has now set properly and the team will be changing the road closure onto King Street from February 16 while Devonshire Street will be back open to traffic up to the bandstand from around midday.

"Phase 3 of the scheme will be completed in 3 weeks, with an end date being scheduled for Friday, March 8."

Following the announcement of free parking at Drovers Lane; Sandgate; Bluebell Lane and Princes Street, Dan Harding, Vice Chair of Penrith BID, said: "We recognise the gas works have a major impact on the footfall into Penrith town centre and want to support our businesses in any way we can.

"Working with Westmorland and Furness Council and covering the associated costs to make all council car parks free after 3pm throughout the town will hopefully encourage people to come into Penrith, despite the road closures, to do their shopping and support their local businesses.’’
