CARLISLE fire crews have been the beneficiaries of training in horse handling from a racehorse rescue charity.

Firefighters from Carlisle East Fire Station were treated to an afternoon of learning about animal behaviour, handling and grooming.

A spokesperson from Carlisle East Fire Station said on X, formerly Twitter, :"They covered animal behaviour, handling and grooming, and will be hosting us for some animal rescue exercises in the near future, which is vital for us to maintain our competency in animal rescue, meaning we can swiftly and safely help animals in need.

"Carlisle crews put these skills to the test at the Centre approximately 5 years ago, when they were called to come to the aid of an elderly rescue horse called ‘Peak’ who could not get off the floor of his stable due to an injured leg.

"Our crews managed to get him up to receive veterinary treatment, from which he thankfully recovered, and lived a happy life for another 5 years- before sadly passing away of old age recently at the ripe old age of 30," they said.
