'SIGNIFICANT progress' is being made in the construction of the Carlisle Southern Link Road's structures and associated drainage.
Now in its ninth month, the project, a partnership between Cumberland Council, Galliford Try Infrastructure Ltd and local subcontractors, was launched in June 2023 with an investment of £212 million.
The 8km road includes four new roundabouts, five cycle bridges, four road bridges, and an entire length cycle path on its northern side.
This major infrastructure project aims to accommodate the planned construction of 10,000 new homes at St Cuthbert's Garden Village.
Construction of the renewed roadway has seen reduced earthwork during the cold season.
These conditions have allowed for "concentration on the structures and associated drainage," said Cumberland Council.
In a February update, the build saw continued drainage works, concrete pours for the abutments of the Durdar Road bridge, along with the installation of the beams.
Additionally, works associated with the West Coast Main Line bridge were also undertaken.
In line with the collaborative effort, their February agenda included the 'Your road to a better future' project in collaboration with Inspira and the Job Centre.
This program offers locals interested in joining the construction field support through a four-week program.
