CITY centre Chinese takeaway could get new windows if the proposal gets listed building consent.

A planning application has been submitted to Cumberland Council to replace two first floor front windows and install insulation to the underside of the roof at the back of the property.

The proposal is for Yummy's Chinese Takeaway, in Warwick Road in Carlisle, which is located in a Grade II listed building.

If permission is granted the new timber casement windows would be painted white and the ceiling would be insulated plasterboard.

According to a heritage statement the terrace, which includes a pub, seven houses and nine shops, was first listed in April 1994 and it dates back to the 1830s.

The report states there are mixed early and late 20th Century shop fronts on each ground floor with sash windows above, some with glazing bars in painted stone architraves.

It adds: "Street was laid out as turnpike road to Brampton 1829-30 and, when built, this part of Warwick Road was called Henry Street.

"The site consists of a single property with commercial use (takeaway) on the ground floor of the premises and residential to the first floor.

"The application building dates from the 1830s when it was originally used as a dwelling house, the ground floor changing to commercial use and the shop front being added probably in the first half of the 20th century.

"This application proposes no change the use of the property and only minimal change to the fabric.

"The existing timber windows are sash windows painted green and split horizontally in two. The top half opens and is top hung.

"The proposal is to change the windows to new timber painted white in a similar style but with both halves opening."

According to the report the ceiling follows the profile of the roof in this area where painted boards have been fixed to the underside of the rafters.

It adds: "The intention is to remove the t+g boards and replace them with a PIR insulation board, vapour control layer and plasterboard and skim between the purlins. The purlins will remain visible to retain the character of the space."

The application is currently being considered by planning officers at the council.
