Cumberland Council is set to rejuvenate Market Square and Greenmarket in Carlisle into a 'vibrant, multifunctional events space'.

The Council has been calling on residents and businesses to shape the project by providing feedback on their preferences for the future events hub.

The scheme involves the enhancement of a 6,000 square-metre area, aimed at making it an attractive destination for the local community and tourists.

The project, in collaboration with Natural Dimensions, includes 'aesthetically unique' elements such as benches designed to look like they are twisting out of the ground and heritage-based lighting that casts a light on Carlisle's history.

The Council assured that while four trees were removed, new trees and shrubs will be replanted, maintaining the greenery in the city centre.

The removal incorporated an agreement with the British Legion to relocate the war memorial and its benches to a more significant spot within the Market Square.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said: "The Market Square and Greenmarket project promises an energetic and inviting event space, in the heart of the city.

"It will combine the richness of Carlisle's history with contemporary design.

"We invite residents and businesses to share their thoughts, ensuring that this space becomes an area that we can all be proud of."

He added: "Your invaluable input through this short questionnaire will benefit the project, and it will only take a couple of minutes to complete the brief survey.

"I want to thank everyone in advance, for taking the time to help us."

Residents and businesses can respond to a few questions regarding their thoughts and preferences by accessing the survey available online until midnight on Friday March 8.

The council is actively encouraging the public to contribute their views to the project, ensuring that the redesigned area nurtures community engagement and stands as a welcoming beacon for all visitors.
