CUMBERLAND Council will assume responsibility for the function carried out by the local enterprise partnership (CLEP) from the beginning of April.

The organisation was formed in 2014 but in August last year the Government announced that it would cease to provide core funding for the LEPs from April 1, 2024, and it would support local authorities to take over responsibility.

Darren Crossley, the council’s director of place, sustainable growth and transport, told members of the council’s LEP overview and scrutiny committee, that the authority had been invited to apply for up to £240,000 in Government funding.

The committee met on Tuesday (February 27) at Cumbria House in Carlisle and committee chairman, councillor Joseph Ghayouba (Bransty, Labour) suggested that they have a look at the various portfolio holders’ titles and responsibilities.

The committee agreed with the suggestion as well as noting the contents of the report.
