A THIEF who stole vodka from a supermarket while on a suspended jail term has been locked up.

Ryan Langcake, 33, entered Tesco in Workington on January 28. He was seen removing the security tag from a bottle of Grey Goose vodka with a pair of pliers.

He was seen concealing the item and then leaving the store, making no attempt to pay. The incident was caught on CCTV, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.

Prosecutor Pamela Fee said there were a number of dishonesty-related offences on the defendant’s record and the latest offence was aggravated by the fact he had gone equipped for the theft.

Langcake, of Far Moss, Northside, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop.

Mike Woolaghan, defending, said: “I appreciate he had pliers with him. It’s not especially sophisticated.

“He was stopped in the store. The item has been resold.

“He has got a poor record. He consumed some alcohol. It was a flash decision. He has expressed regret and remorse.”

The court was told that the offence had been committed while Langcake was subject to a suspended sentence order.

Magistrates decided to activate the order and jailed Langcake for a total of 24 weeks.

He must pay a £154 victim surcharge on his release from prison.
