A Brampton secondary school has confirmed the permanent appointment of its headteacher.

In a letter to parents, Des Bird, the Cumbria Education Trust's director of secondary improvement and John Storr, chair of the William Howard School Local Advisory Board confirmed that following a 'thorough national recruitment process' Kath Pigdon had been appointed to a permanent role.

This appointment follows an interim period in the role after former head Chris McAree stepped down in February 2023 after a 'spell of ill health'. Kath initially joined William Howard School in 2009 as an assistant headteacher and was promoted to deputy headteacher in 2014.

In the letter to parents Des Bird and John Storr said: "We are confident that under Ms Pigdon's leadership, WHS will continue to thrive, providing an enriching educational experience for our students.

"Ms Pigdon is committed to maintaining open lines of communication with both parents and students and has already introduced a range of opportunities to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure the success of every student.

"The whole Cumbria Education Trust team will support Ms Pigdon and WHS to ensure the school continues to 'be the best they can be'.

"We are excited about the positive impact that Ms Pigdon will undoubtedly continue to make and we thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to the school."

Reflecting on her appointment, Kath said: "I am both excited and honoured to continue as Headteacher of William Howard School.

"As Headteacher I remain fully committed to ensure our students receive the best educational experience during their time at William Howard."
