The Green Party has announced candidates for Cumbrian constituencies as it gears up for a forthcoming election.

The two candidates, for the ‘Whitehaven and Workington’ and ‘Penrith and Solway’ constituencies, have been announced.

Jill Perry, a long-standing member of the party and Cumberland Councillor, will stand for the Whitehaven and Workington constituency, while Susan Denham-Smith will stand for Penrith and Solway.

Ms Denham-Smith lives in Ennerdale and is a veteran of the nuclear waste dump protests in the valley, as well as the ongoing campaign against the coalmine.

She is also a member of Wild Chorus, a local choir, which has sung at protests at the mine site.

A recent party member, she said: “I am a firm believer that the climate crisis will require the environment and green policies at the centre of every political decision, so I want everyone to have the chance to vote Green.”

Ms Perry said: “We are aiming for four Green MPs at this election but under a truly democratic system of proportional representation we will gain the numbers that the country needs.”

Gavin Hawkton remains the Green Party candidate for Carlisle.
