Demolition work has begun on a fire-damaged building in Maryport.
Cumberland Council is overseeing the work at the Bakehouse on Senhouse Street after the failure of the building owners to comply with a court order instructing them to carry out necessary works.
After a fire and subsequent damage to the building in February 2023, the owners and council worked with the emergency services to make the building safe.
Additional works were then the responsibility of the property owners.
After no action from the owners, the council obtained a court order specifying the required repairs and their timelines.
It was made clear to the owners that if they failed to act, the council would proceed with the necessary works and seek reimbursement for the costs incurred.
A spokesperson for the Cumberland Council said: "In light of the property owners' inaction, we have taken the necessary steps to carry out the required works.
"We have appointed a local contractor, and work is set to commence shortly."
Stobbarts has been selected by the council to oversee the repairs, which are expected to span approximately two weeks.
The primary focus will be on ensuring the structural integrity of the building, including the removal of debris resulting from previous collapses caused by the fire damage.
