Tucked away in a quiet woodland location on the western shore of Windermere is a place where you can become an instant soap star! Happily, there’s no acting involved.
It’s the new workshop of Pure Lakes Skincare, the popular Lake District brand, which for the first time is letting visitors get their hands dirty (if that’s the right phrase) creating their own artisan soaps.
Pure Lakes Skincare, in the little village of Far Sawrey, has developed masterclasses in the art of soap making – or if you prefer, candle making.
Whichever you choose, it’s a fascinating and rewarding way to spend a day out on your doorstep.
The scenic trip to Far Sawrey, in the heart of Beatrix Potter country, is a treat in itself – as is the tranquil woodland location of Pure Lakes’ new premises.
In the new visitor centre there, you begin to learn the art of mixing your own combination of essential oils into the perfect, aromatic blend for your homemade soap.
You are in safe hands – the masterclasses are led by Claire McKeever, one of the owners of the company who has years of experience creating the company’s award winning range of natural skincare products.
But while Claire offers advice, it’s up to you to decide exactly which combination of essential oils you use - so you have only yourself to blame if it ends up something of a nose-wrinkler!
The masterclasses can accommodate individuals or groups and are split into two halves. During the break there’s the chance to relax and enjoy your surroundings along with some homemade cake and locally roasted coffee.
The visitor centre is alongside the production workshop where you can see Pure Lakes’ products being hand crafted – before they are distributed to customers nationally, internationally and to some of the most prestigious hotels and attractions in the Lake District and wider UK.
At the end of the masterclass you get to take home your handmade candle or soap as a sweet smelling reminder of your creative day out in the Lake District.
This is a different and deeply enjoyable day out on your doorstep. It’s creative and hands-on. It’s good for couples, groups of friends or solo travellers. It could even make an alternative hen do activity or a corporate team building away day.
Groups are kept small and the sessions are informal, chatty and friendly. So you might end up making friends as well as soap and candles!
