Cumbria's newly appointed High Sheriff has pledged his commitment to supporting the county's youth.

Christopher Holmes, from Scotby, was officially installed in his role for 2024-25 at The Fratry of Carlisle Cathedral, succeeding Samantha Scott, of Windermere.

Mr Holmes, a deputy lieutenant of Cumbria and former chief executive and chairman of Cumbria-based Carrs Group, said: “With the help of previous High Sheriffs and others I aim to explore ways of helping and creating opportunities for the youth of Cumbria.”

He said his previous role as chair of Carlisle Youth Zone (CYZ) from 2013 to 2023 had highlighted the need to increase support for children and young people across the county.

CYZ is a charity that has almost 3,000 members aged 7 to 25, committed to creating an impact on the lives of young people.

His installation was attended by Alexander Scott, Cumbria’s Lord Lieutenant, and was presided over by His Honour Judge Barker.

Timothy Cartmell was appointed as Under Sheriff and The Reverend Canon Dr Benjamin Carter as the High Sheriff’s Chaplain.

The new High Sheriff expressed admiration for Samantha Scott's contributions during her term and her efforts to support and recognise individuals and causes around the county.

Mr Holmes stated his eagerness to spotlight smaller charities and causes as part of his cycle of duty.
