TWO Lib Dem parliamentary candidates have united in calls for peace in Gaza.
The calls follow the tragic death of three British aid workers, killed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), in what Israel has acknowledged was their own strike.
Parliamentary candidate for Whitehaven and Workington, Chris Wills, has declared that the UK must cease supplying weapons to Israel until there is an evident dedication to a ceasefire and a two-state arrangement.
"The UK should stop supplying weapons to Israel until there is a clear commitment to a ceasefire and a two-state arrangement.
“I’m adding the need for British taxpayers to stop funding weapons which are likely to kill our own citizens," he said.
He reiterated his call to fellow Parliamentary Candidates in Whitehaven and Workington.
Neighbouring candidate Brian Wernham, standing for Carlisle, has echoed Mr Wills’ sentiment, supporting sanctions and a halt in arms export to Israel.
"The deaths of three Britons assisting in the delivery of aid to Gaza killed by the Israeli army have highlighted the terrible, indiscriminate and ineffective use of blunt force in Gaza," he said.
“I call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
"Peace is only achievable through a two-state solution that guarantees the dignity and security of all involved parties.
"This reflects the Lib Dem commitment to a diplomatic solution that respects the rights and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians.
"As the Liberal Democrats' Parliamentary Candidate for Carlisle, the party's position is clear: immediate actions, including sanctions and halting arms exports, coupled with a steadfast commitment to diplomacy and peace, are crucial to resolving the Gaza conflict.
"The Liberal Democrats continue to support efforts that lead towards a lasting peace, underpinned by the principles of justice, human rights, and the well-being of all individuals affected by the conflict," he said.
Condemning the attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023, Brian said: "We fully support the United Nations investigator on war crimes, Pramila Patten, who is gathering evidence for war crimes tribunal charges against the Hamas terrorists and the Hamas leadership."
