THE Cumberland area will be seeing miles of road resurfacing due to the first slice of a £1.2 billion funding reallocated from the HS2 project.
The funds are to be used for repairing potholes and improving local roads.
Previously in November, the Government had declared an £8.3 billion investment to address poorly surfaced roads and pothole-ridden streets nationwide.
The northwest region was due to receive £1.2 billion from the northern leg of HS2, re-committed over an 11-year span.
Councils across the northwest have already been paid over £19 million to get on with the work and deliver improvements, with another £19 million following in this financial year.
As a condition of this funding, and to make sure money is being spent on pothole repairs, local authorities are required to publish a two-year plan detailing exactly which local roads will benefit.
The Government’s plan hopes to save motorists up to £440 on vehicle repairs.
