THE recent implementation of the Carer’s Leave Act 2023 is set to bring much-needed support to the thousands of unpaid carers in Carlisle.
This act, which came into effect on April 6, allows individuals caring for a relative or friend, to take up to five days unpaid leave from work to fulfill their caring responsibilities.
Last year, the News & Star reported data from the Office for National Statistics from the 2021 census that showed 2,700 people in Carlisle were working 50 hours or more every week as unpaid carers.
John Stevenson MP, a vocal advocate for the Carer’s Leave Act in Parliament, has welcomed the positive impact this legislation will have on the 4,388 unpaid carers in Carlisle.
“I am pleased this act is now a reality, helping millions of people with the flexibility they need to help care for their loved ones.
"I also welcome the fact that so many employers have already supported and implemented this," he said.
Carers UK shared that approximately 2.3 million workers across the nation could reap the benefits from the act, while over a million employers will need to make some adjustments to accommodate the implementation of this right.
Such measures have been welcomed, as Carers UK's stats reveal that an average of 600 people every day abandon their jobs to give full-time care to older or ailing relatives and friends.
Leading employers, many of whom already offer Carer’s Leave, state that this type of backing can increase business benefits by improving productivity through better staff retention and supporting employee wellbeing.
