A COMMUNITY group in Cumbria has been formed to buy out the village shop with members encouraging people to come forward and support their plans to maintain what they say is a 'vital community asset'.
The Hesket Newmarket Community Shop steering group has formed to raise funds to buy the village shop in Hesket Newmarket, near Wigton and keep it open with hopes of transforming it into a true community asset.
The group say that the present owner Andy Bothamley and his staff have worked amazingly well especially throughout Covid when they were open every day and delivered to all the surrounding areas.
However Andy is ready to retire, and the group say they cannot risk losing this vital community asset and lifeline which has served the area well for many years.
Philippa Groves from the Hesket Newmarket Community Shop steering group said: "Hesket Newmarket shop is more than just a shop; it’s a focal point in the village, it’s a reason to go for a walk, a community meeting place, a source of local information, a stop for visitors, and a provider of everyday items, as well as an essential post office used by people from miles around.
"We are applying for funding but we also need local investors and for people to come forward as shareholders as they did over twenty four years ago when the Hesket Newmarket Brewery was formed and a few years later when the community sprang into action again and bought the Old Crown pub in the village."
Mark Jenkinson MP said: “I am delighted that community efforts to save the village post office and shop have been making steady progress – and I would urge everyone to get behind this campaign.
“Earlier this month, I joined residents of Hesket Newmarket in Caldbeck Village Hall to discuss the future of this local amenity.
“The meeting was very well-attended, and the passion and commitment of those involved really shone through.
“It is very encouraging to see the motivation of those behind the project, and I think their determination and drive bodes very well for the success of this project."
