CARLISLE has welcomed the vibrant addition of a new florist and homeware boutique on the city's high street.

Located in a beautifully presented unit in Carlyle's Court, Katie Byers first opened The Bloem last week.

Hailing from Penrith and having lived in Carlisle for a long time, her journey took an international detour to Rotterdam, where she worked with the smoothie company Innocent.

After living in Holland for a year, Katie decided to come and set up shop in Carlisle.

"There's no better place to be in the world if you like plants than Holland," Katie said.

"I've taken the Dutch word for flower 'Bloem' for the name. I was planning that when I was out there so that's where that inspiration comes from.

"When I was growing up my parents had a nursery, so they grew plants and flowers.

"I've always liked the idea of my parents running a business so I thought there's never been a better time," she said.

Since opening its doors a week ago, The Bloem has garnered a bouquet of positive responses from the community.

"It's been great and positive for the first week, everyone's reaction has been lovely," Katie said.

"We've had loads of support from other small independent businesses in the area, Castle Chocolates shared us on Instagram, and so did Ashbridge & Brown and Flutter & Fern, everyone's been so supportive it's been really great," she said.

As well as having bouquets and plants ready to go, the shop also takes custom orders and provides bespoke bouquets for special occasions.

Besides flora and fauna, The Bloem also has a collection of homeware, including vintage items.

"It's such a nice place to spend the day," Katie said.

As The Bloem blooms in Carlyle's Court, Katie extends a warm invitation to all to pop in for a visit.
