A PARANOID Carlisle man subjected three complete strangers to unprovoked violence, knocking one of his victims unconscious.
The most seriously injured person, a man who had been on his way to a restaurant with his wife to celebrate their wedding anniversary, had some of his teeth knocked out and was left bleeding heavily.
Brady Wilson, 34, admitted five offences: inflicting grievous bodily harm, an actual bodily harm assault, an affray, and two assaults on emergency worker, both police officers.
At Carlisle Crown Court, prosecutor Tim Evans said the defendant’s violence began shortly after 5pm on April 6 last year in Dalston Road.
The first victim had just finished work and visited the Aldi store on Dalston Road to do some shopping. “He was walking towards his car when he received a large impact on the right side of his head,” said Mr Evans.
“He described it as a thump. He saw the defendant running past him.”
The man was left with a large lump on his head and facial bruising. A later CT scan at hospital showed there was no serious injury.
After that assault, witnesses saw Wilson attack a second man, but he did not wish to make a formal complaint. Wilson then went into the Aldi store and began threatening staff.
Two women workers there heard him say: “If you look at me, I’ll splatter you.” He also said that they could not throw him out of "his" country.
Mr Evans said: “Luckily, he left the store without causing any injury and then made his way along Dalston Road; this was caught on CCTV.”
The barrister described the next attack, the most serious. A couple who were on their way to a wedding anniversary meal at a restaurant saw Wilson approach them, seeming to "swagger" as he walked.
“In an unprovoked attack, he walked up to [the man], and forcefully punched him in the face,” said Mr Evans. “The blow was such that it knocked him unconscious and he fell to the floor.
“He was bleeding heavily from the face, and his front and bottom teeth were smashed. His bottom teeth went through his front lip.”
Passers-by helped the couple. After the attack, the victim suffered repeated problems with infections but thankfully a CT scan showed nothing of concern.
The victim later said he now felt “anxious, nervous and extremely wary” when he was out and about. When police found Wilson, he was “extremely aggressive.” After he was handcuffed, he spat at two police officers.

Referring the Wilson’s police interview, Mr Evans said: “He denied the assaults and his comments were bizarre at times and showed clear paranoia.”
The defendant’s criminal record of 53 offences included drug and alcohol offences, assaults, and racially aggravated threatening behaviour.
In court, it was confirmed that doctors had diagnosed Wilson, of Caslin Way, Carlisle, with paranoid schizophrenia. Two doctors supported the defendant's compulsory hospital detention for the protection of the public.
Anthony Parkinson, for Wilson, said the defendant had shown some remorse but he was clearly unwell. “He recognises that and he presents today in a much better way than he presented in September last year,” said Mr Parkinson.
Recorder Julian Shaw said the defendant required hospital treatment and he had already been held at a psychiatric facility in the north-east for some time.
“When your treatment is completed,” said the judge, “you will not be eligible for release until a first-tier mental health tribunal has determined that it is safe for you to be released.”
The Recorder imposed a hospital order – compelling treatment – along with the restriction that involves Wilson’s detention within the secure facility where he is presently being held.
The order has no specified time limit.
