IN this edition of nostalgia we are looking back at Stanwix Bowls Club throughout the years.
John Chatburn a member of Stanwick Bowls Club, spent a considerable amount of time researching the history of the club.
In 1929, work started on laying a new green in its present location, then owned by the church authorities.
In 1930, the opening match was arranged with St. Peter’s Church Institute Bowls Club on Whit Tuesday. An opening ceremony was performed by a Mrs. Wetenhall.
In 1932, members paid an annual subscription of 10 shillings.
In 1933, the club purchased a pavilion for £20. It was erected after being carted from Ringstead.
By 1939, the outbreak of the second world war brought an early closure to the season and the cancellation of a couple of matches
The club celebrated their centenary in 2023 after COVID delays.
