PLANS have been put forward to convert the first floor of a hair and beauty salon in Penrith into a flat.
The application to change the first floor of Creations Hair and Beauty Salon, on Poets Walk, was submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council on April 25.
The salon, which has been there for over 20 years, has no plans of disrupting its much-valued services operating on the ground floor.
The proposal involves minimal alteration to the existing building structure, mainly the construction of a solid block internal wall to separate the commercial and residential spaces.
"The external character of the building will be maintained," the proposal reads.
This proposed conversion seeks to address a rising demand for residency within the town.
"The proposed conversion will have minimal impact on the heritage significance of the building and its surroundings," the report reads.
"The construction of a short internal wall on the first floor will not alter the exterior appearance of the building or its architectural features.
"The proposed changes are reversible and can be removed without causing damage to the original structure if necessary.
"Furthermore, the conversion of underutilised space on the first floor into a residential dwelling will contribute positively to the revitalisation of the building and the surrounding area.
"It will provide much-needed housing options while maintaining the building's connection to the community."
