DARTS teams from rival towns will go head-to-head at a charity match to be held in memory of a popular player.
The Workington Darts Organisation and their counterparts the Whitehaven Marras n Arras have organised, for the first time, a Workington V Whitehaven match.
16 players from each organisation will take to the stage at Workington Royal British Legion on June 15 to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
It will see 16 matches played out on stage in best of five legs format. The winning organisation taking home the Shaun Weaver Memorial Trophy and the pride of winning the inaugural event.
The event will be called ‘The Jam Cup’ in a nod to the long-running rivalry between the two towns, who refer to each other as ‘jam eaters’.
The term is thought to originate from opposing members of the Cumbrian mining community with the insinuation that they could only afford jam as a sandwich filling.
Ben Nicholson, one of the event organisers, said: “The Jam Cup has already caught the imaginations of many and is being likened to the famous Workington v Whitehaven head to heads on the rugby field!
“Making it even more special is the trophy that we will be playing for and who it remembers.”
Shaun Weaver was a popular darts player, DJ and rugby fan who sadly passed away in 2017.
Ben said: “He loved his beloved Workington Town and especially the matches against Whitehaven and we thought it only appropriate to name our trophy in his memory as he would have loved a Workington v Whitehaven darts match.
“It is an idea both organisations have worked on for the last few months and we will be making it a yearly event with the venue switching each year. We will also be selecting a charity to raise funds for through the event each year.
“This year is Macmillan Cancer Support as one of our members, Chris Simmons is taking on the mammoth task of ascending three Spanish Summits this October for the charity and we want to give him all the encouragement we can and raise as much as possible for a fantastic charity.
“Interest in the event has been incredible, with messages of support coming in from across the county.”
Spectators will be able to watch all the entertainment on the day for just a £3 admission fee which will all go to the charity. Each player who is selected to play in the event will also be donating £10 each to Macmillan Cancer Support.
