AN audiologist company has put forward plans to open a new store at Carlisle's 4 Devonshire Street.

Hidden Hearing, one of the UK's leading private hearing healthcare companies, has put forward the plans to Cumberland Council on May 21.

Founded in 1968 as a family-run enterprise, the firm offers free hearing tests, helps patients overcome hearing difficulties, and sells hearing aids and related accessories.

The site is currently vacant and in a former life was used as a bank.

The plan proposes three full-time employees.

The design and access statement, prepared by Bell Associates, reads: "Hidden Hearing intends to lease the ground, basement and first floor of the unit, with the second and third floors remaining in the landlord’s possession.

"The unit is to be fitted out to function as a shop for the sale of hearing aids and provision of various audiology services. Rooms include reception, consulting rooms, accessible WC, staff kitchen, and storage.

"Hidden Hearing tends to occupy units for extended periods and invest significantly in those branches.

"This would help ensure the prominent retail presence in the area is retained.

"The current condition of the site is detrimental to the character of the wider building and Devonshire Street.

"This will be particularly notable when the improvement works to the public realm of Devonshire Street is complete. Therefore, it is hoped the potential occupation and high-quality shopfit of the unit will be welcomed.

"The investment would also be coming in a time of uncertainty for the high street," it reads.

Ben Blain of Carigiet Cowen, introduced the building to Hidden Hearing, whilst they were looking at various options for the city centre.
