CARLISLE and Eden Age UK have reiterated that they are not impacted by the other closures of Age UK stores in west Cumbria.
It was announced on May 25 that Age UK West Cumbria will cease its operations on May 31. There are six charity shops in Whitehaven, Workington, Cleator Moor, Cockermouth, Egremont and Wigton, as well as the equipment shop in Workington.
Citing a 'number of financial challenges', a spokesperson from the charity said the board of trustees have now made the 'difficult decision', which means is will not continue offering services to older people across West Cumbria after May 31.
However, Age UK in Carlisle and Eden have stated they are not impacted. They said: "Whilst we are saddened and disheartened with the news about Age UK West Cumbria, we want to reassure all our stakeholders that Age UK Carlisle and Eden is an independent organisation and will not be impacted by the current situation.
"We will continue to deliver our diverse range of services and urge anyone who wants further advice or help to please contact our office on 01228 536673. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by these events."
Age UK Carlisle and Eden have numerous offices and shops based around the area. The Head Office is based on Spencer Street in Carlisle, and there are stores on Lowther Street and Denton Street.
Following the closure announcement, an appeal has been launched by Lee Gray from Age UK West Cumbria Retail. In a statement posted on Facebook, Lee wrote: “If anyone has any job vacancies for retail managers, retail assistants or retail volunteers please could you contact me ASAP.
“Our retail staff have been with the company for many years. Their dedication and support for the organisation has been a great asset over the years. It would be sad to see all their hard work and experience go to waste.
“There’s a lot of talent within my team that you could benefit from.”
