A RAPIDLY growing Carlisle-based car enthusiast group is tackling the stigma associated with car meets while supporting local charities.

Founded only in March, Carlisle Modded has grown from three cars at their bi-weekly car meets to over 170.

Ryan Mumberson, founder of Carlisle Modded, said: "We’re trying to take away the stigma from car meets and the anti-social behaviour that’s often associated with it.

"It’s been creating quite a stir in the Carlisle car scene," he said.

Ryan, who has had a love for all things cars and motorbikes since he was a child, said the group is making a point of being all-inclusive and open to all ages, types of drivers, and backgrounds.

"I’ve attended meets all over the country and they can be very selective about the people that go. With us, it’s not like that," he said.

The diversity of attendees is notable, attracting not only young car enthusiasts but also older generations bringing down classic cars with modern engines.

One event on Carlisle's Port Road, which is often catered by local businesses, saw over 300 people in attendance.

As interest continues to grow, Carlisle Modded is seeking more space to accommodate enthusiasts from around the country.

“We draw in everything from Nissan Micras to Skyline GT-Rs from groups up and down the country."

Emphasising safety, Ryan said: "Perhaps in the past, groups have run events and let people run wild, we try and put a lid on it.

“There are so many young deaths on roads these days, especially young drivers.

"If they had a safe space to go and discuss cars, then maybe there's a chance they won't go 120mph down the bypass.

"It’s not about coming into a car park, racing around and doing donuts.

"It's not only about not disrespecting property for us but safety for those who come, especially the many families," he said.

His journey from street racing as a teenager to advocating for safe meets helps push forward the group's vision.

"I’ve lost people to car and motorbike accidents due to stupid driving – now it’s about containing it in a safe space rather than having people race around the streets," Ryan said.

In addition to reshaping the image of car meets, Carlisle Modded engages in charitable endeavours.

They recently raised over £400 for Carlisle MENCAP, which supports individuals with learning disabilities, through a 120-car convoy adhering to speed limits.

Events have also been 'positively supported' by Cumbria Police.

Carlisle Modded has been sponsored by local businesses including BJF Services, Border City Autos Carlisle, Underwood Motorsports Carlisle, CA Customs and Northwest Mapping Solutions, Prestige Wheels, and Chemical Guys.
