RESIDENTS in north Cumbria could be offered a ground-breaking cancer 'vaccination' as part of a new clinical trial.
North Cumbria Integrated Care will not be delivering the vaccine themselves, however the Trust has confirmed it will be collecting samples from consenting colorectal patients to see if they are suitable for both this trial and future trials.
A spokesperson said: "Those who are found to be eligible for one of the vaccine studies will then be contacted to see if they want to take part by a trust that is running the trial."
The samples are analysed to identify mutations specific to a person's own cancer. From there, a 'personalised vaccine' is then created which will help the body recognise and fight any remaining cancer cells.
The trial is part of the NHS Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad which aims to speed up access to the vaccine.
NHS England is aiming to provide 10,000 patients in the UK with the vaccine by 2030.
