SCHOOL students were treated to fish and chips as they learnt about the importance of the national dish during the war effort.

Raughton Head Primary School have been learning about the First and Second World Wars, and were taught about the importance of our national dish and how this humble meal was a vital ingredient of the war effort in both wars.

The British Government safeguarded the supply of fish and potatoes during both world wars to ensure the dish remained a boost to morale and these foods were among the few not to be subject to rationing during both world wars.

Caddy's Fish and Chips in Carlisle "very generously donated a fish and chip meal to every school member in recognition of this."

Alison Dickinson, Headteacher said: "We have all worn red, white and blue to mark the colours of the United Kingdom and took time to remember those who served, and still do, serve for us.

"The Poem For Schools, 'D-Day Heroes' has been shared with the children along with The International Tribute."
