Coastguards were called out to help a kitesurfer who was suspected injured.

The Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said they, along with colleagues from Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team, responded to a 999 call about a hydrofoil kitesurfer in difficulty near the shore at Workington.

More information from the coastguards’ coordination centre in Belfast explained that the kitesurfer was seen to be quickly out of the water on the north side of Workington, but was seen walking around looking confused.

A spokesperson from the Whitehaven team explained: “This raised concerns for welfare and possible injuries.

“With the team soon on scene we were able to locate and assess the potential casualty.”

They said the kitesurfer was located safe and well, and told coastguards they accidently got tangled in an anglers’ fishing tackle, which wrapped around their legs and foil.

“At the same time, they had broken away from their kite which had drifted in the wind and landed ashore, hence them walking around on the beach and grassed area to locate this once ashore,” the spokesperson added.
