TWO people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an alleged stabbing in Carlisle which left a schoolgirl hospitalised.

A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident on Whernside.

Police received an initial report of a male with stab wounds at 8.06am on Monday. Officers attended and also located a woman and child with stab wound injuries, said a Cumbria Police spokesman.

A 55-year-old man has been arrested and is in police custody. A 53-year-old woman has also been arrested and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The girl, of primary school age, remains in hospital and is in a stable condition, said police.

One resident, who lives nearby, said she had seen police around while children were going to school. She added: "This is so sad."

Other residents said they were disturbed by the incident.

Some residents admitted feeling fear following the alleged incident, with one suggesting they would be scared of their children playing out alone.

Cumberland Council member Jeanette Whalen, who represents the Yewdale ward, said the alleged stabbing happened 'very near' her home and she was 'stunned' at the news.

"It's a very quiet area, you don't hear anything like this at all, people just keep themselves to themselves," Cllr Whalen said, explaining the area of Richmond Green and Whernside.

"I can understand some people feeling uncomfortable and unsafe but rest assured the police will be around to keep the area safe," she added.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "There continues to be no further risk to the public and they should expect to see a continue police presence in the area whilst officers carry out investigations.
