A school community is raising money for charity in memory of a much-loved member of staff.

Pupils of all ages at Pennine Way Primary School in Harraby will be undertaking a fundraising walk on June 18 to commemorate Erica Bell who died suddenly earlier this year.

Erica worked in the kitchen at the primary school where she was loved by both staff and children.

Lindsay Burnett, headteacher, said: “Erica was a fantastic member of our team at school. She was caring to all our children, always remembering their likes and dislikes and making sure they were served with a smile and kindness.

“She was a supportive colleague with a brilliant sense of humour which we miss immensely. The school community wanted to remember Erica with a sponsored walk as she is thought of daily with fond memories.”

The school has already raised more than £1,100 ahead of Tuesday's walk which will be donated to North Cumbria Cancer Care - a charity which was close to Erica's heart and chosen by her family.

Pupils in key stage two will complete five laps of the school's cycle track, which is approximately one kilometre, whilst younger children will aim for three or complete their walk around the playground.

They are encouraged to wear colourful clothes as a celebration of Erica's life and bubbly personality.

Colleague Kirsty Turner, who worked with Erica in the kitchen, said she was an incredibly special person who will never be forgotten.

“Erica had a massive heart and was always willing to help. She will be a huge miss at Pennine Way Primary School.

"Erica touched many hearts over the years and was one in a million. There will never be another one like our Erica.”

The school will also be planting a cherry blossom tree to create a lasting legacy of the impact Erica had on the community.
