EIGHT schools took part in the first Rural Schools Festival of Singing this week held at Greenhill Hotel near Wigton.

Fiona Ramsay, a music teacher, organised the event which allowed a mix of pupils aged 7 to 11 years from the smaller schools in the region to sing in a much larger choir.

Over 200 children were led in the singing by a music specialist and trained teacher Ellen Smith who is currently studying postgraduate work in opera at the University of Birmingham.

A spokesperson said: "For some of the children it was their first experience of singing harmonies. The children learned complementary parts for African Hurrah and then the Bob Marley classic, Three Little Birds.

"Pupils from Allonby, Bothel, and Rosley schools each performed a song they had practiced for the occasion.

"Also attending were children from Holme St Cultram Primary in Abbeytown, St Michaels in Westnewton, Bowness on Solway Primary, Richmond Hill Primary, and Thursby Primary School. The children managed extremely well - Fiona and Ellen hope to make this an annual event."
