IN this edition of nostalgia, we will be looking at the local shows in our area throughout the years. Today, we are focusing on the Cockermouth Show.
Cockermouth Show is an agricultural event guaranteed to bring farmers and visitors from far and wide for a weekend of fun. We've taken a look into the archives to look at the show from years gone by.
The Cockermouth and District Agricultural Show is hosted each year at the beginning of August and the agricultural show takes place on the land in front of 'The Fitz' in Cockermouth.
The event promises entertainment for everyone, with an action packed day for all the family. You can view all sorts of animals at the show including cattle, sheep, goats, horses, poultry even ostriches, sheep dogs, foxhounds and terriers. There is also Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling each year, as well as horse jumping, new and vintage machinery, and craft stalls.
There are various classes in the industrial marquee comprising bread, cakes, produce, floral art, handicrafts, photos, and different classes for children.
The show ran fairly consistently however, the 2007 show was cancelled at the last minute, due to the announcement of a foot and mouth outbreak in Surrey late on the evening before the show.
In 2007, the event was seemingly underway but the plug had to be pulled last minute and all the arrangements were taken down.
The Cockermouth Show returned in 2022 for the first time since the pandemic began. The event attracted thousands of people in spite of the rain. Hundreds of sheep, cattle and horses competed for rosettes.
