LIBRARIES in the Cumberland district have been issuing bans for abusive behaviour and people viewing indecent images, it has been revealed.

A Freedom of Information request to Cumberland Council, submitted by the News & Star, has detailed accounts of bans issued from 2021 through 2024 to date. 

A total of eleven library bans have been issued since the beginning of 2021. 

2021

July 19 – Cleator Moor Library: Four individuals were banned for engaging in anti-social behavior.

2022: 

March 9 – Carlisle Library: One person was banned for abusive behavior.

November 14 – Carlisle Library: Viewing inappropriate images on a laptop led to a ban.

December 1 – Carlisle Library: Another incident of unreasonable behavior resulted in a ban.

July 12 – Workington Library: One person banned for PC and internet misuse.

August 14 – Millom Library: One individual banned for abusive and inappropriate behavior.

2023:

June 10 – Cockermouth Library Link: One person was banned for PC and internet misuse.

August 22 – Carlisle Library: Abusive behavior led to another ban.

2024: 

As of mid-2024, no new bans have been reported.

The figures reflect both the challenges faced by library staff and the steps taken to maintain a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all patrons.
