Members of a young farmers club near Carlisle will embark on a nearly 900-mile journey to raise money for charity.

Starting on June 29, members of the Raughton Head Young Farmers Club will complete the distance of Land’s End to John O’Groats collectively in one day – a total of 874 miles, raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The decision to fundraise for this charity came after someone close to the club was recently diagnosed.

Richard Messenger, a local dairy farmer from The Howes, Calthwaite farms cows with his wife Elisabeth and four children - Will, James, Emily and Eddie.

He was diagnosed with MND in February 2024 and with three of his four children, members of Raughton Head YFC, it ‘was a certainty that our 2024 charity challenge would raise money for such a worthwhile close to home cause’, a spokesperson from the club said.

“Members will be stationed at the Recreation Centre in Dalston from 10am and there will be two stationary bikes and rowing machines for members to contribute towards the total if they so wish.” they said.
