A Carlisle woman is celebrating after winning Newsquest's £1,000 DIY competition. 

Lynne Hetherington, a long-time reader of the News & Star, has never failed to enter the competition since its start. 

Ms Hetherington, who retired from the Oxfam book shop on Bank Street six years ago, said she is now looking forward to spending her winnings. 

She said: "I was thrilled. We have a paper every day, I've entered so many competitions and never won anything. I was delighted. I've been subscribing for a few years now.

"I've been looking at the list of places you can spend the vouchers, there is such a range of things you can do with it.

"I think we will probably have a few days away, some meals out... and then do some decorating.

"The chances of winning twice are probably quite slim, but I will keep on doing it!"
