Workington Academy has been forced to close after a power cut in the local area. 

School busses are on their way to the school to take children home who normally take the bus. 

Children who are unable to leave the site will be supervised at school. 

In a statement, Workington Academy said that the 'welfare and safety' of pupils is their number one priority. 

A spokesperson for Workington Academy said: "Due to a power cut in the local area, we have no choice but to close the school.

"Parents are asked to text their children confirming they are free to leave site. This will be checked by class teachers.

"Any student unable to leave site will be supervised, however please note we do not have power, a phone line or toilet facilities.

"The welfare and safety of our students will always be our number one priority."
