The construction of a new road aiming to improve access to the M6 will see new closures from today.

Cumberland Council said they’re working on the A595 and Dalston Road, meaning access to the village will not be possible from Carlisle via Dalston Road.

Dalston Road will be fully closed every day for about 14 weeks, meaning there is no access between the Peter Lane junction and Brow Nelson during this time.

This is to enable the construction of the Cummersdale roundabout and footbridge – a fully-signposted diversion route is currently in place.

Access from Durdar to the M6 is also restricted via two routes, and affected by temporary traffic lights via three others.

A full closure from Buckabank Road will result in no access to the M6 – this is so the council can do earthworks and drainage work in the area, and will be in effect for several weeks.

Additionally, access from Newbiggin Road will be in place during this time to enable works associated with the new Brisco roundabout.

Two-way traffic lights are in place from Monday to Friday elsewhere on Buckabank Road, Ivegill Road, and Redcat Crossroads, to facilitate plant access and roadworks associated with the new roundabout.

While the work is causing disruption on the roads, updates have shown it’s progressing.

Last month saw the successful installation of six steel bridge deck beams for the bridge on Durdar Road, a key milestone in the completion of the road.

When completed, the link road project will see a relief road built south of Carlisle linking the M6 to the A595 at Newby West which will reduce traffic through the city centre and also help to facilitate the St Cuthbert's Garden Village project, which will see 10,000 new homes built.

Elsewhere in Carlisle, the city is undergoing a major renovation.

The Staples building was torn down and the Pools building is nearly fully demolished to progress with the Station Gateway project – aiming to improve access to Carlisle railway station and pedestrianise the surrounding area.

In the future, the Citadel area will see a new university campus for the University of Cumbria, and the nearby English Street and Devonshire Street will be changed to become more pedestrianised.

Work is ongoing on the latter street, resulting in changes to bus journey schedules and access for motorists is fully restricted, while pedestrian access is maintained fully.
