A Carlisle primary school's football team has celebrated winning a county championship.

Year five students from Newlaithes Junior School took part in the Go Active tournament which took place on Friday, June 14 at Carlisle's Harraby 3G.

The tournament involved around 20 teams from across Cumbria, with Newlaithes coming out victorious.

This capped off a successful year for the school's football team who also narrowly missed out on a place in the EFL Kids Cup final at Wembley, being defeated on penalties in the semi-finals in Wigan, two matches away from the capital.

After their latest tournament win, Newlaithes Junior School coach Jose Sanchez was on hand to express his delight.

He said: "It was a really good tournament with fantastic quality from all of the teams that were there.

"Wherever we go we give 100 per cent. We have been working and training with the lads since September and that has paid off I have had this team since they were in year four.

"This group has won county finals and we went to Wigan this year with EFL and lost on penalties in the semi-finals. We were only two games from Wembley.

"They are quality players and lovely human beings who show amazing effort, teamwork, and respect which are the values that we have as a school.

Jose was also keen to double down on Newlaithes Junior School's core values and how these are reflected in its successful football team, with their recent tournament win being the 'icing on the cake'.

He said: "There were 20 teams there so to be honest the chances of winning are quite slim so you have got to make sure that when you go to a tournament that you enjoy the whole thing.

"It is celebrating a sporting event and that is what we go for and if you win or do well that is the icing on the cake.

"We value winning because it is very hard but if you don't win you take all the positives and the enjoyment of representing the school."
