A band known for being a favourite of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is coming to Cumbria.

The Vaselines, a Scottish indie rock band, have left an indelible mark of their own on the music scene despite their relatively brief initial existence.

Formed in Glasgow in 1987, the band was the brainchild of Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, whose lo-fi, irreverent, and often cheeky style quickly set them apart in the burgeoning alternative music landscape.

Musically, their sound is raw, DIY, blending with catchy melodies and a punk-rock edge.

Lyrically, they’re known for playful yet often subversive themes, in songs like “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam” and “Molly’s Lips”, which later gained wider recognition when covered by Nirvana.

Despite their sound being loved by one of grunge rock’s biggest stars, their commercial success was initially limited, releasing two EPs called Son of a Gun and Dying for It, and an album called Dum-Dum before disbanding in 1989.

Their influence remained active, largely thanks to Cobain’s frequent citing of them as a major influence. leading to a resurgence of interest in their music.

This revival culminated in the band reuniting in 2008, and since then, they have released two more albums, Sex with an X (2010) and V for Vaselines (2014), both of which received positive reviews and reinforced their status as cult icons in the indie rock world.

The Vaselines' music continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans, proving that their offbeat style and spirited irreverence have timeless appeal.

Whether through their original recordings or the widespread covers by other artists, The Vaselines' impact on the indie rock genre remains significant and unmistakable.

They will be performing live at The Brickyard in Carlisle on October 10 this year.
